Governments in Ancient Greece was a big deal and still is, causing huge impacts around all city states, even though the aim of the system was to protect the Athenian women and provide for them. instead Sparta aimed at production and producing the strongest warriors, for that reason the women could protect themselves and did not have to rely on the husband for everything, unlike Athenian women. The woman was not allowed to make a will nor any business dealings exceeding a half medimnos of barley (the amount to sustain a family for six days). otherwise in Sparta, women weren't just thought of as a minor before the law, they assisted the law. "Unlike other Greek women Spartan women could own land and property and decide how it be run." (Fiona, 1999, p.34) Women in Sparta had to be independent, caused by their husbands being away for months because of the government keeping the men in the barracks or they are away fighting wars. Women in Athens were very dependant, not entirely by choice but had to remain in doors and if they were wealthy they'd send their servants to do, what ever needed to be done. "I said, 'for you to remain indoors and to send out those of the servants whose work is outside; as for those whose work is to be is done inside, these are to be your charge;" (cited by Socrates, Williams, 1996 p.396) The government had a strict overview of all women in Greek city states, although Sparta was strict in other angles towards women.
